Always Up-To-Date Guide of Instagram Image Sizes [last update: March 2019]
Social media portals compete with each other in popularity, number of users and functionalities. The days of Facebook’s glory are slowly passing by, in the USA users cannot live without Twitter, and Instagram is slowly becoming a leading player in the market we know well.
Today I will focus my attention on Instagram photo sizes. Let’s start!
This article is updated regularly. Last update – March 2019
Standard size (square)
Square is the most standard size of photos published on Instagram. The size recommended by the portal is 1080×1080 pixels, both for photos and videos.
- Photos: 1080 x 1080px
- Videos: 1080 x 1080px
The horizontal format is ideal for taking pictures of landscapes and views, for example during a mountain expedition.
For horizontal and vertical photos, Instagram does not recommend any specific dimensions. It all boils down to proportions. Ideal for horizontal photos is 1.91:1.
Portrait (vertical) photos
I recommend vertical posts to all fans of selfie and group photos. They allow to present well all people on the photo, and also a fragment of the background.
In the case of vertical photos, Instagram also does not specify their dimensions but gives an ideal ratio: 4:5.
Instastories are short videos, showing the life of a brand or a user. They are an effective way to share with fans what is happening in the company at the moment. They are also used for engaging customers and building relations with them.
When it comes to designing graphics for Instastories, here again, Instagram doesn’t tell about right sizes but suggests to use proportions from 9:16 and 16:9 to 4:5.
Instagram is an excellent tool, which makes easier for brands to reach their – mainly young – audience. By taking care of the size of the photos, you can also benefit from advertising on Instagram.
